Joshua gives the Israelites a choice.
Joshua addressed all the people:
“If it does not please you to
serve the LORD,
decide today whom you will serve,
the gods your fathers served
beyond the River
or the gods of the Amorites in
whose country you are now dwelling.
As for me and my household, we
will serve the LORD.”
-Joshua 24:15
Points for meditation:
(1) Joshua is a cognate version of
the name Jesus. Joshua was the warrior
leader who led the Israelites across the Jordan River to take back their
homeland. We generally think of Christ’s
typology as prophet (Moses), Priest (Aaron), and King (David), but does the
typology extend to warrior (Joshua)? And
if so, how is Christ a warrior?
(2) Why is this reading paired with
John 6:60-69 in today’s lectionary, where Jesus shocks the disciples with his “hard”
declaration?
